"This is part of a series of work titled, Looking for Water Buffalo. It is based on family history from oral stories about my grandfather riding on water buffalo in the village of Jandiala, India where he was born and an archive of photo slides from my Aunt Joyce’s art gallery in the Air India offices in Los Angeles, CA in 1961. As I looked through these slides, I was looking for statues of water buffalo. The closest I found was a small bronze horse adorned with all kinds of embellishments. In this piece, aged and blurry detail shots of this bronze horse form the pattern of the background fabric, while the foreground is built from patterns of room dividers in the Air India office. Colors were also determined based on the office décor." - Kira Dominguez Hultgren
