Renee Gentler – Afterglow in Divided Space

26 February - 3 April 2010
The show is based on a photograph of a furniture exhibition in 1930, of a room designed by the Hungarian architect and furniture designer Marcel Breuer. In the image there were two spaces: Room for a Woman and Room for a Man. The man’s room featured a globe, a world map, a telephone and a desk. In the woman’s room there was a bed, a lounge chair and a vase of flowers. The photograph spurred questions about what is female space and what is a male space and what objects inhabit those spaces. The resulting installation is an exploration of these ideas through objects that I imagined a man and a woman would posses. The gallery is divided by a folding screen into two sides – his and hers. The male objects are a collection of globes and other models based on research of astronomy.  The female objects are a collection of natural curiosities, feathers, a replica of a spider web, and other natural phenomena. The collections are stored in cabinets and the women’s side has a lounge chair.
