Mary Finlayson's paintings celebrate colours, patterns and shapes, navigating primarily themes of home and memories. By flattening the perspective of each scene, her works offer an intimate look into each space. Her interiors pay homage to the iconic works of David Hockney, Henri Matisse and Stuart Davis, borrowing similar bright color palettes, repetitive patterns and simplified forms, yet creating sophisticated, tightly constructed compositions with a unique and precise style. Her works evoke memories of place, often a departure from what is real. The vivid use of color and energetic lines enlivens private environments, thus representing them in an unusual and never banal way. Mary Finlayson's background is in both painting and printmaking. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University, a BA in Art Therapy from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute and a BA in Art Education from the University of British Columbia. Mary Finlayson lives and works in San Francisco. Inside the JoAnne Artman Gallery in Laguna Beach, Mary Finlayson is on view with other Californian artists, Michael Callas and Thai Mainhard, in a group exhibition titled "Califoria Dreamin'" until July 15th.
